Course Description

Introduction to the anatomy and physiology of the cardiac system. Students learn how to perform electrocardiogram (EKG) on patients, troubleshoot EKG machine problems, and recognize basic cardiac arrhythmias. Spirometry testing is performed. Students will also learn to respond to common emergency situations, administer first aid in accordance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards, recognize the effect of stress on all persons involved in emergency situations, and demonstrate self-awareness in responding to emergency situations. Emphasis is placed on professional attitudes and the principles and basic concepts of ethics and laws involved in providing medical services. Students must obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification through the American Heart Association.

Course Overview

Since medical emergencies can happen anywhere and at any time, the first response to such incidents is most important.  The Berkeley College Medical Emergencies and Electrocardiography course introduces individuals to the anatomy and physiology of the cardiac system. Learners will perform EKGs on patients and will be prepared to administer first aid in accordance with standards outlined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Spirometry testing, learning how to respond to common emergency situations, administrating first aid, and demonstrating self-awareness in responding to emergency situations will be explored. Basic concepts of legal and ethical topics will be studied to ensure proper administration of medical services.

Eligibility Requirements

This course is designed specifically for individuals who have healthcare work experience or individuals who have a good understanding of human anatomy and physiology.

When taken as a stand-alone course, applicants must provide documentation of transcripts’ showing the candidate has taken medical terminology or anatomy and physiology or human biology courses at a post-secondary institution, or proof that the applicant has graduated from a healthcare program. Documentation of work experience can be in the form of a letter from his or her immediate supervisor on business letterhead documenting his or her experience working in the medical field. Documentation of the education maybe in the form of a valid diploma, or higher earned degree, transcript, or other acceptable official documentation which confirms that the applicant meets or exceeds the minimum level of academic training in medical terminology and human anatomy. Please send documentation to maria-rivera11@berkeleycollege.edu.  

Certification Examination

All topics explored in this course prepare learners for the Certified Electrocardiography Technician (CET) certification examination offered through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA), as well as for Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification through the American Heart Association.
