Program Overview

This short-term training program is designed for individuals looking to transition careers, re-enter the workforce, or who are interested in learning new skills.  The program provides individuals with an opportunity to gain an entry-level position in healthcare.  

The Berkeley College Medical Administrative Assistant program provides learners with the skills required to work as an administrative medical assistant performing clerical work in a variety of healthcare settings. Students will learn how to handle all administrative front desk duties; answering calls, scheduling appointments, and how to maintain medical records using computer systems to achieve office tasks.

Eligibility Requirements

Individuals with a high school diploma or its equivalent are welcome to enroll in this certificate program. 

Certification Examination

At the conclusion of the program, learners will be eligible to participate in the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) national certification exam administered through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

The following costs are included in the fee for the Medical Administrative Assistant program:

  • Certification exam for the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) offered through the NHA
  • Certification exam review for the CMAA
  • Required E-texts
  • Required software

This program also prepares learners for the Certified Electronic Health Records Specialist (CEHRS) certification examinations offered through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

The Medical Administrative Assistant Program is offered through Berkeley College Online® and is designed to be completed in as little as two semesters.

Semester 1

  • HEA2200 - Medical Terminology (15 weeks | 3 credits)
  • SCI1120 - Human Biology (15 weeks | 3 credits)
  • CIS1115 - Computer Applications (15 weeks | 3 credits)
  • ENG1105 - Writing and Research (15 weeks | 3 credits)
  • HEA1101 - Foundations of Health Services (15 weeks | 3 credits)

Semester 2

  • MED1120 - Medical Office Administration (15 weeks | 3 credits)
  • HEA2255 - Electronic Health Records (15 weeks | 3 credits)
  • MBC1105 - Medical Coding (15 weeks | 4 credits)
  • HEA2310 - Patient Care Communication (15 weeks | 3 credits)
  • MED2285 - Medical Administrative Assistant Capstone (15 weeks | 2 credits)

Credit hours from the completed program may be applied toward credits for a degree program offered within the College’s School of Health Studies.
